Chris Martin: Paintings
I edited Chris Martin‘s definitive painting monograph. 40 years of paintings are complemented by essays by Glenn O’Brien, Nancy Princenthal, Trinie Dalton, and yours truly. This was a labor of love in careful collaboration with Chris. The blurb goes:
Drawing on inspirations ranging from Buddhism and American modernist painting to psychedelia and Amy Winehouse, Brooklyn-based painter Chris Martin (born 1954) “lets the paintings make themselves,” with often generously scaled canvases characterized by flat yet textured planes of bright, saturated color, frequently incorporating found materials and highly personal paper ephemera. The emphatic geometries of his paintings, which indicate his attachment to Piet Mondrian, are another signature touch, conveying a genially brash New York energy.
“Call him what you will,” Glenn O’Brien writes. “Art is magic. Chris Martin is a magician. He creates mojos, mandalas and divining tools, the sort of art made to conjure. He’s made a planetary annex and you can have one too. He’s got the goods. Control panels for nature. He has been everywhere. He has seen everything. He has knowhow. He’s got pizazz. He’s got it going on. Chris Martin is the Dali Lama’s favorite painter.”
